The Controller is responsible for maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Controller reports to the executive team and has responsibility for all financial records, payroll, banking, and daily operations of the accounting department.
Overall Focus

  • Supervise financial and accounting functions with direct oversight of accounts payable, billing, accounts receivable, job costing, and payroll entries.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to Operations so they can make informed decisions.
  • Coordinate with Operations to ensure timely recording of transactions and the integrity and accuracy of financial reports.
  • Streamline and enhance the monthly reporting package to ensure timeliness of discussion with upper management including financial statements, operational metrics, reporting of any control deviations or failures, and others as considered necessary.
  • Ensure the design and implementation of adequate systems, processes and controls to comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, (GAAP), prevent or detect financial reporting fraud, and avoid deficiencies in internal control over financial reporting.
  • Consistently strive to improve financial reporting to meet the needs of Company leadership.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare analysis and reconciliation of monthly financial activity.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets.
  • Perform cash projections to effectively manage cash balances.

Accounting and Financial Management

  • Lead the month-end close processes and engage team members of the Accounting team for timely closing.
  • Review journal entries required to reflect monthly activity.
  • Verify subcontractors and vendors meet all requirements of their contract agreements prior to any payments (i.e. insurance, bonds, releases of lien, sworn statements of account, billing procedures).
  • Manage monthly balance sheet account reconciliations per company policy.
  • Ensure that all active jobs are billed in accordance with their percent completion.
  • Coordinate and oversee physical inventory of capital assets.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of weekly payroll, making proper federal and state taxes and 401k deposits into respective accounts.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching and succession planning to all direct reports.

Cash Management

  • Monitor bank activities using the authorized access to the online banking systems.
  • Perform cash projections to effectively manage cash balances.
  • Manage online banking and positive pay transactions.
  • Maintain all company operating, payroll, savings and investment banking accounts including deposits, disbursements, and balancing.
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed and reported to the Partners.


  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual review and tax returns.
  • Ensure that accounting practices are in compliance with all relevant accounting standards, state and federal regulations and Company values and practices.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Monitor bond claims and assist Operations in the resolution of claims.
  • Coordinate the provision of information to insurance auditor for annual workers compensation audit.
  • Maintain state registrations, business, and tax licenses, etc.
  • Ensure that subcontractors' insurance certificates are up to date and conform to their contract requirements.
  • Prepare and send timely 1099s.

Information Systems

  • Work with leadership to maintain computer network system for organization including, but not limited to, recommendations for upgrades, consistent software across systems, daily backups, troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
  • Maintain safe and routine off-site storage of information systems backup as a part of a disaster recovery plan.


  • Bachelor in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience with 3 or more years in a managerial role.
  • 3+ years of construction accounting experience
  • Must have up-to-date knowledge and understanding of accounting and finance practices for the construction industry.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel ability.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional skills in the operation and functioning of computer software.
  • Proficiency in construction accounting software.
